The Greatest Among You

After a full day of dusty travel, the great Teacher had gathered in His twelve followers for a meal. Dirty and grimy, they were glad to sit down and receive nourishment. But now the meal is over, and a quite amazing thing is happenning. They watch in consternation as the Teacher they so highly esteem rises, exchanges his outer garments for a towel, and pours water into a basin standing nearby. "What does He think He is doing?" they might have whispered amongst themselves. Bending down at the feet of a disciple, He washes off all he filth with His own hands, and wipes the feet with the towel He's wearing. The disciples are astonished - their Master has just degraded Himself by stooping to the lowliest, most disgusting task imaginable, usually asigned to the unfortunate lowest-ranking servant.
